Amid the uncertainty of the mining industry, Queensland Gas Commission Commissioner Shane Charles, says it’s time for businesses to reflect, network and regroup while waiting for a resurgence in the Surat Basin.
There are forecasts the Surat Basin will host a potential $180 billion energy industry boom, which includes more than 60 major projects expected to be operational in the next 20 to 50 years and create about 12,500 jobs.
But Mr Charles, who is also chairman of the Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise, is forthright right now “Times are very tough.
“Luckily for the Surat Basin there are still contracts to fill and the gas has to continue to flow, and while capital expenditure has slumped, there still some activity in the upstream,” he said.
Yet Mr Charles maintains there is no better place to be than the Surat Basin.
